PRANA, SHAKTI & THE FORCE WITHIN

You are not the one generating it. You are the one it moves through. A clear look at prana, Shakti, and what changes when energy moves freely through the body. This guide explores what prana and Shakti actually are, and what changes when energy moves freely through the body rather than getting stuck.

Tantra works with more than the physical body. This guide introduces the subtle body and why it matters.

PART 2

PRANA, SHAKTI & THE FORCE WITHIN

A clear look at prana, Shakti, and what changes when energy moves freely through the body.

PART 3

Sexual Energy Is Sacred Energy

Why Tantra sees sexual energy as powerful life force, and what becomes possible when it is met consciously.

In this article

Last issue we introduced the subtle body: the energetic layer beneath the physical one. The natural question that follows: what actually moves through it?

Tantra has two words for it. Prana. And Shakti. They are not the same thing, and the difference between them matters.

2. PRANA: THE BREATH BEHIND THE BREATH

Prana is often translated as life force, but the simplest way to understand it: prana is what breath carries. Not the air itself. What comes in with the air. It is the body's basic charge, the thing that makes sensation possible, that makes you able to feel anything at all. When prana is high and moving, experience feels rich. When it is low or stuck, everything flattens into a quiet disconnection that is easy to dismiss as just how things are.

3. SHAKTI: THE FORCE THAT WANTS TO MOVE

If prana is the charge, Shakti is the current. Prana is the body's basic life energy. Shakti is something wilder: a force that moves through you but is not generated by you.

You have felt it. It shows up in creative flow, when something moves through you that you did not plan. It is what shifts in the room when two people are fully present with each other. Tantra's question is simply: how do you let more of it through?

  • When energy flows:

Voice resonant, unhurried. Emotions arise and pass cleanly. A sense of inner fullness that doesn't depend on anything happening outside.

  • When energy is contracted:

Voice tight or flat. Emotions get lodged rather than moved through. A low-grade flatness attributed to tiredness, or just "how things are."

4. A Simple Prana Practice: The Gap Between Breaths

THE GAP BETWEEN BREATHS

Take a full breath in. At the top of the inhale, let there be a natural pause before you exhale. In that gap, notice what is actually there. A warmth, a fine vibration. The tantric texts describe this moment as the place where prana becomes perceptible.

5. BRINGING PRANA & SHAKTI INTO DAILY LIFE

In the next issue: sexual energy is not separate from what we have been describing. It is the most concentrated form of it. Tantra has always worked with it at the centre of the path, not because the tradition is about sex, but because it is about awakening.

1. Opening: Presence & Breath

Paragraph text begins here. This is body copy in a light sans-serif. Maintain clear leading and a measure comfortable for reading.

01

Sexual energy is a life force, not just a reproductive one. From a Tantric perspective, it is the fundamental spark that animates the body and the most potent resource we carry.

02

You can feel it. You probably already have. Think of a moment of genuine creative inspiration, a surge of aliveness after cold water, or the electricity before a first kiss. That charge is not separate from sexual energy. In Tantric understanding, it is the same current moving through different channels.

  2. Step two — description

  • Gentle breath practice
  • Grounding exercise

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About TantRIC Sexuality FOR THE MAN

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRANA AND SHAKTI?

Prana is the current, the life force moving through your breath and your body right now. Shakti is what that current becomes when it gathers and wants to move somewhere. Think of prana as the charge, and Shakti as the pull that charge creates. They're not separate forces, just different moments of the same energy.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOUR ENERGY IS BLOCKED?

You'll usually feel it before you can name it. Tightness in the chest, a held breath, restlessness with nowhere to go, or the opposite, a flatness where nothing seems to move at all. Blocked energy often shows up as tension in one specific place in the body rather than an even, spacious feeling throughout.

CAN YOU ACTUALLY FEEL PRANA MOVING THROUGH YOUR BODY?

Yes, and most people already have without naming it. That warmth after deep breathing, the tingling after a good stretch, the shift in the room during ecstatic dance or lovemaking. Prana is subtle, but it's not abstract. Slowing down and paying attention is usually all it takes to notice it.

IS SHAKTI THE SAME AS KUNDALINI?

Related, but not identical. Shakti is the broader creative force, the energy that moves through everything. Kundalini is a specific, concentrated form of Shakti that lives coiled at the base of the spine until it's awakened and rises through the body. So kundalini is one expression of Shakti, not a different thing entirely.
